Community Therapy Services offers The Hanen ProgramŽ It Takes Two to Talk for parents who have young children with language development delays. The 13 week programs are usually run once in the spring and once in the fall. Check our upcoming events page for dates.
It Takes Two to Talk is a parent education program that teaches parents to foster language development in their child. The program is based on the theory that children learn to communicate during the naturally occurring conversations of daily life. Children whose communication skills are not developing normally will benefit when their parents have been instructed in ways to adapt and intensity their interactive style.
It Takes Two to Talk targets three goals:
- Education - to help parents gain a better understanding of how children develop language and of everyday strategies they can use to promote their child's development
- Intervention - to provide opportunities for parents to learn to apply these new strategies with their child under the guidelines of a Hanen-trained speech pathologist
- Support - to give parents opportunities to share ideas, issues, and concerns with other parents who are in similar situations.
Community Therapy Services has had a great deal of success through the Hanen It Takes Two to Talk programs. Over the course of the13 week program, children usually make gains of 3 to 15 months in language development.
